Clues to Outflows: Polarization of IRAS-Selected QSOs
نویسنده
چکیده
Broad-band polarimetry and spectropolarimetry of a complete sample of 18 luminous AGNs (Lbol ≥ 10 L⊙), selected in an orientation-independent way by warm infrared flux, shows that an orientation – dust-covering Unified Scheme like that successfully explored for the lower luminosity Seyfert galaxies applies to the luminous QSOs. Broad emission lines and continuum seen in polarized (scattered) light show that hyperluminous infrared galaxies contain buried QSO nuclei and are therefore the ‘missing’ QSO 2s – the high-luminosity analogs of Seyfert 2 galaxies like NGC 1068. Most of the QSOs show significant polarization and reddening. Three are ‘classical’ low-ionization BAL QSOs, and several others have narrower, blueshifted, low-ionization absorption. These properties are to be compared with those of the UV-optically selected QSOs, of which only ∼1% show low-ionization BALs, and only the BAL QSOs show significant polarization. Outflows are therefore much more common than previously suspected. 1. The Relevance of Polarized IRAS AGNs to Mass Ejection from

Hst Ultraviolet and Ground-based Optical Spectropolarimetry of Iras Qsos: Dusty Scattering in Luminous Agn
We present UV and optical spectropolarimetry of two highly polarized IRAS -selected QSOs, IRAS 13349+2438 and the BALQSO IRAS 14026+4341. The polarization in both objects rises rapidly toward the blue, peaks near 3000Å in the rest frame and remains nearly constant for shorter wavelengths. The rest frame optical polarized flux density spectra also increase rapidly towards the blue, but then decr...

We performed spectroscopic observations for a large infrared QSO sample with a total of 25 objects. The sample was compiled from the QDOT redshift survey, the 1 Jy ULIRGs survey and a sample obtained by a cross-correlation study of the IRAS Point Source Catalogue with the ROSAT All Sky Survey Catalogue. Statistical analyses of the optical spectra show that the vast majority of infrared QSOs hav...
متن کاملThe Puzzle of the Lyman Continuum Polarization of Qsos
Recent spectropolarimetry of QSOs has revealed a surprising rise in polarization in the Lyman continuum of several objects. We discuss several recent attempts to interpret this feature, including the role of Lyman limit absorption in PG 1222+228. We present new theoretical results involving electron scattering in a hot corona or wind above an accretion disk, and polarization resulting from the ...
متن کاملPolarization properties of a sample of broad absorption line and gravitationally lensed quasars
New broad-band linear polarization measurements have been obtained for a sample of 42 optically selected QSOs including 29 broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs. The polarization properties of different sub-classes have been compared, and possible correlations with various spectral indices searched for. The main results of our study are: (1) Nearly all highly polarized QSOs of our sample belong to t...
متن کاملAre red 2MASS QSOs young?
We use photometric data from the Spitzer mission to explore the midand far-infrared properties of 10 red QSOs (J −K > 2, R −K > 5 mag) selected by combining the 2MASS in the near-infrared with the SDSS at optical wavelengths. Optical and/or near-infrared spectra are available for 8/10 sources. Modeling the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) from UV to far-infrared shows that moderate dust redde...
